Welcome to yesterday. No; not the upcoming movie release. We’re talking about Ayruveda.
Ayurveda, which means “the science of life” or “life knowledge,” is a 5,000-year-old system of natural, holistic healing and medicine. Its roots are found in the Indian Vedic culture, particularly the Vedic texts, known as ancient books of wisdom. And its wisdom is still alive and well today.
At its core, Ayurveda asserts that health is much more than just the absence of disease. Health is being vibrant and having abundant energy and vitality through balanced food intake and lifestyle, complemented with a variety of plant-based medicines and other health-boosting measures and treatments.
Ayurveda is not a “one size fits all” approach, either. In fact, it is a wise, tailor-made assessment and protocol for each person’s requirements, based on his or her bodily composition, with true health being the balance of and integration among the body, mind, spirit and environment. Often, how a person's tongue, skin, nails, eyes, lips and hair appear are surefire indicators of the individual's state of health, according to the Ayurvedic way.
Ayurveda also offers a roadmap to optimal, practical daily and seasonal diets as well as other routines, certain behaviors and the use of our senses to achieve extraordinary health. The primary purpose of Ayurveda is to determine each person’s areas of imbalance and to restore balance by using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage, body cleansing, music and/or meditation to bring a person back into balanced health.
Ayurveda notes that humans are a part of nature and should look to nature and natural methods to maintain vibrancy, energy and all-around maximal health. In short, Ayruveda supports health without interfering with the natural intelligence of the body.
Ayurveda also contends that all things are made up of the five elements of air, water, fire, earth and space, which combine to form three primary metabolic types, or doshas. These metabolic types are what constitute some of our unique, individual differences, and, therefore, the need for individualization when it comes to creating balance when there’s imbalance.
What’s more is that Ayurveda has no negative side effects—another reason why people from all around the world are welcoming its ancient science and applying it to their lives in this modern day and age.
So, welcome to yesterday. We certainly can learn from the past, and Ayurveda is one area that offers much in terms of our health.
