Become a Green Patriot

As the author of Safe Trip to Eden: Ten Steps to Save the Planet from Global Warming Meltdown, I make the case that one of the benefits of environmentalism is taking steps to reduce our dependence upon foreign oil, which can strengthen America’s security.

That’s why I’m trying to field an army of Green Patriots (check out who can help spread the message that our individual shopping choices truly have a profound impact on change.

When consumers choose healthy, organic foods, and emphasize a more plant-based diet with organic fresh produce and foods that are minimally processed, not only are they improving their personal health, but they are also taking weight off the planet.

That’s because organic foods are grown without the use of petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, which are linked to a myriad of health defects, including cancer, reproductive toxicity, and neurological damage. So one of the best decisions you can make for your personal health just happens to be one of the best decisions you can make for improving our planetary health.

Also, when consumers consume meat from animals that are grass-fed and fish- caught sustainably, once again, they are doing something that’s both important for their health and for the planet. When you choose grass-fed beef, for example, you’re putting a value on grass management which is synonymous with wildlife habitat. Grass-fed animals spend most of their time in open pastures, where ecology is critical.

Mel Coleman, founder of Coleman Purely Natural Products, once told me that all ranchers are really grass managers and that America’s private grasslands, when taken in total are among the key habitat areas for many of America’s most vulnerable animal species.

So instead of choosing antibiotic-riddled animals, or those that have been given growth-stimulating hormones, choose meat from grass-fed animals.

You’re voting not only for better health for yourself but also for a healthier planet.
