The list of exercise benefits is impressive. For example, regular exercise—about 20 to 30  minutes at least five times per week—can boost your metabolism, reduce your appetite, support a healthy weight and joints, release endorphins (giving you a sense of control and calm) and support a positive mood. Additionally, regular physical activity decreases your risk of heart, blood sugar, mental, blood pressure, vascular, cellular, immune and digestive unhealth.

And now we can add some additional beauty perks to regular exercise. Not only can it make you look and feel years younger, but it can also help your skin and hair. That’s a pretty nice return from regularly working up a sweat! Here’s why regular workouts benefit your skin and hair.

For starters, according to Noelle Sherber, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Baltimore, Maryland, when your heart gets pumping via aerobic exercise, then your skin reaps the benefits: a healthy dose of oxygenated blood. “It gives you that great post-workout glow,” says Sherber.

Mauro Romita, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Ajune Center for Beauty Synergy in New York City, agrees about the skin benefits of regular exercise. Primarily, it boosts circulation and that has significant skin benefits. “It nourishes your skin, bringing more blood flow and oxygen to it. This will help draw toxins out of the body. Working out [also] corrects the hormonal imbalance that can cause adult acne,” says Romita. Sherber adds that you’ll also want to be sure to gently cleanse your face (and other areas that may tend to break out) immediately after exercising.

And then there’s the benefit of wrinkle reduction and regular exercise. How? Sherber says that regular workouts help to support healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol—and too much cortisol can cause the collagen in the skin to break down. When collagen breaks down, of course, then the skin begins to exhibit wrinkling and other signs of aging. “Elevated cortisol levels are also linked to increased sebum production, which means more acne breakouts,” she adds.

Amy Dixon, a Los Angeles-based exercise physiologist and celebrity trainer explains, “Exercise actually supports the production of collagen. The boost in this protein helps to keep your skin firm, supple and elastic.”

Let’s not forget about those lovely locks and how exercise affects them. Dixon says that the improved blood flow caused by regular exercise helps to keep your hair stronger and healthier. In fact, the blood is packed with nutrients and stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth. “Exercise is also a big stress reliever. Lower stress means your hair is less likely to be brittle and, worse, fall out,” Dixon states.

So, there you have it. Regular exercise already has tremendous perks, but now it is known to benefit your skin and hair.
