Detoxifying Foods

The body is a wonderful machine—even in the area of detoxification—because we have built-in detoxifying areas in the body, including the liver, colon, kidneys, gallbladder, lungs, skin, lymph nodes and the blood. In short, they are always at hand to protect the body from toxins and free radicals that can otherwise do some serious damage to our health.

Sometimes, however, due to our increasingly toxic environment, poor food choices or even breathing, our body needs some help in staying ahead of invading toxins. There are a lot of potential perks to occasionally detoxifying, too. Here are a few of them.

Immune function, healthy cell division and even your joint health can be improved with detoxification. There is a direct correlation between having a body clogged up with toxins and having a less-than-optimal functioning immune system, unhealthy cells and troubled joints. University of California, San Diego, biologist Jasuo Hotta and his research team isolated a glycoprotein element in barley grass called P4D1that not only fought against unhealthy inflammation levels, but also positively affected DNA after cellular DNA was damaged from chemical toxins and by x-rays. In fact, the researchers noted that it repaired the damaged DNA.

Barley grass juice and other cereal grasses also help to clear the body of chemical toxins, accumulated wastes and heavy metals, and reduces the absorption of dioxins due to their chlorophyll content that “moves things along” out of the intestines and out of the body. Likewise, barley grass juice and other cereal grasses are packed with antioxidants that help to detox the liver, which, of course, is the superhero of the detoxifying organs of the body.

And remember that cereal grasses are not cereal grains—and they contain no gluten. Instead, cereal grasses are nutritionally just like leafy green veggies and are filled with chlorophyll, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
