No Hibernating!

No Hibernating!

It’s winter and, baby, it’s cold outside, but don’t stay inside and hibernate while so much fun awaits you out there. When it's not dangerously cold outdoors, you and your family can truly have a winter blast and stay fit in the process! Of course, you’ll have to dress appropriately for the cold and all it brings, but that can be part of the fun.

For instance, a brisk walk or hike out in the cold—by yourself or with a family member or friend—might be just the ticket to boosting your winter exercise routine as well as to rev up your calorie-burning ability, since some experts say that you burn more calories in the cold.

In fact, a University of Utah study says that your basal metabolic rate—that is, how many calories you burn just by existing and not expending any energy—jumps slightly in colder temps. It increases noticeably if you are so cold that you start shivering, which, in itself, is substantial work for your body to keep itself warm.

If you’re among those who have a blanket of snow on the ground with some safe, snow-covered hills nearby, then you may enjoy some sledding or tobogganing with friends or family. It’s great fun and burns calories as well. And for the real daredevils, snow skiing or snowboarding is totally fun and works out your entire body.

And let’s not forget about ice skating. It’s a great winter activity for people of all ages and fitness levels. For safety reasons, you’ll probably want to steer clear of frozen lakes or ponds, however, and head for an ice rink instead. Ice rinks offer ice skate rentals and a family-friendly environment.

You see? There’s no reason to hibernate this winter. So, head on out and have yourself a winter blast!
