Choose Non-GMO

You probably already know to avoid genetically modified organisms (GMOs). They’re the product of genetic engineering that mashes together DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes. Likewise, virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide.

GMOs can lead to infertility; immune dysregulation; accelerated aging; dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis; faulty insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation; and unhealthy changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system. Additionally, the only feeding study done on humans and GMOs showed that GMOs survive and remain inside the digestive tract. GMOs also trigger body-wide inflammatory responses, setting the stage for unhealthy outcomes.

GMOs are nasty, too. For instance, GM corn and cotton produce a poison called Bt-toxin, which kills insects by breaking holes in their digestive tracts, but it can also break holes in human cells. A 2011 study found Bt-toxin in the blood of 93 percent of pregnant women tested and in 80 percent of their unborn babies—a toxin that can be especially dangerous for infants whose blood-brain barrier isn’t mature enough to keep those toxins out.

But think of those poor GM plants and those who eat them! GM plants drink poison, and when those plants are fed to animals and people, they/we get it, too. The truth is that GMOs do not increase yields, drought tolerance, enhance nutrition or provide any other benefit to plants, animals or humans. Instead, they are known for environmental damage and creating health problems.

GMO produce not only has serious health threats, but it also provides less nutrition and is more vulnerable to climate change, pests and disease—making GMOs a damaging force to our earth and its ability to provide healthy, abundant food.

And since GMOs are more vulnerable to climate change, pests and disease, that also makes GMOs a perfect storm for food insecurity, threatening our future of growing and having enough food. GM seeds and GM seed-tailored herbicides are sold as package deals to farmers, but the seeds don’t regenerate from year-to-year—causing farmers’ continual dependency on risky GMOs.

Unfortunately, GMOs are present in at least 80 percent of packaged goods sold in the average U.S. grocery store, but you can avoid GMOs by choosing products that are Non-GMO Project Verified. By choosing Non-GMO Verified, you can help ensure that we, our children and other loved ones have safe, healthy food.

Be smart. Choose Non-GMO and look for the Non-GMO Project Verified seal. You’ll be glad you did.
