Issue 66: Time For an Oil Change?

Cod liver oil is a golden oil of the healthiest kind. Packed with omega 3s DHA and EPA, plus vitamins A and D, cod liver oil is a dietary supplement staple for many. Cod liver oil and other fish oils, via their omega 3 content, can help maintain a healthy heart and blood vessels, support brain health, maintain healthy blood pressure levels and joints—among other health benefits.†

Just as rich as the nutrients in cod liver oil, is its history. One recorded (and somewhat barbaric) production of cod liver oil was during 1775 in England. Cod livers were literally tossed into the London streets to let their oils drain out. The oil was then collected and sold as cod liver oil.

Talk about crude oil!

Cod liver oil usage in the 1700s was significant, however, because it was used in fighting rickets caused by a vitamin D deficiency. Cod liver oil is high in vitamin D, so it was a good pick. Cod liver oil went more mainstream in the mid-1800s, as quality and taste improved through steam processing. This delivered a cod liver oil higher in quality, color, and taste.

In the 1930s, doctors recognized the benefits of cod liver oil and production soared. By 1936, a higher-grade cod liver oil was introduced and public interest grew. During World War II, cod liver oil was used by pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. But they were not alone in the cod liver oil club. Nearly all children under the age of five and people over 40 also used cod liver oil to avoid malnutrition.

Thank goodness we have come such a long way in the cod liver oil manufacturing industry. (No more cod liver oil on the London streets.) Cod liver oil now can be processed by advanced chemical engineering that removes most of the saturated fat by fractional distillation. It also removes virtually all of PCBs (measured in parts per billion) in the cod liver oil by a sophisticated form of molecular distillation.

This has brought about a new standard in cod liver oil—one that delivers a pure, concentrated amount of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA, without unwanted byproducts. This pharmaceutical-grade cod liver oil can deliver high enough levels of long-chain omega-3s to the brain and to the body.†

Cod liver oil…it’s come a long way, baby.
